Minimally invasive surgery in GynOnc: 3rd Giovanni Scambia Surgical Week
Razionale scientifico
OBJECTIVE
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has become integral to contemporary gynecologic oncology, expanding from standard staging procedures to increasingly complex resections, fertility- and function-preserving strategies, and selected approaches for recurrence. At the same time, MIS is evolving in a landscape shaped by heterogeneous evidence, rapid technological innovation (robotic platforms, fluorescence guidance, vNOTES, artificial intelligence), and growing expectations for reproducibility, safety, and oncological adequacy. This creates a clear educational need: to align technique with evidence, define indications precisely, and standardize anatomical templates and procedural steps across gynecological malignancies. The 3rd Giovanni Scambia Surgical Week is designed to address this need through an intensive program that combines cadaveric dissection, live surgery, high-yield lectures, and video-based technique demonstrations. The course emphasizes how to select the appropriate MIS approach, execute procedures safely and efficiently, and manage complexity without compromising oncologic adequacy.
FORMAT
Full week seminar dedicated to minimally invasive surgery in gynecological cancers, combining live surgeries and surgical technique lectures with videos . Face-to-face interaction with the Gemelli faculty will be favored because of limited number of on-site participants. However, online registration is available for colleagues who do not consider travelling to Rome.
Across five days, the curriculum provides disease-specific depth:
• Cervical cancer: current indications for simple vs radical hysterectomy, sentinel node strategy, and the role of MIS in different setting of disease
• Endometrial cancer: robotics vs laparoscopy, hysteroscopic and non-hysterectomy pathways when appropriate, vaginal surgery including vNOTES, and MIS in recurrence.
• Ovarian cancer: MIS in early-stage disease, nodal strategies (SLN/LFN), and evidence-informed positioning of MIS in primary and interval debulking as well as recurrence; dedicated focus on tailored approaches (including vNOTES in selected BRCA carriers).
• Miscellaneous: overview of additional MIS techniques and emerging indications (including fertility-preserving procedures, groin dissection, uterine & ovarian transposition, uterine transplantation), evidence-based comparison of robotic platforms.
World-class experts will moderate online the live surgery sessions. In the afternoons, with the contribution of the Gemelli team and of the world-class faculty, emphasis will be given on detailing surgical techniques. Long time will be dedicated to discussions.
